Introduction to Yangko Opera (Zezhou Yangko)

Applicant: Zezhou County, Shanxi Province

Zezhou Yangko was originally sung by Yingshen Saishe and Yuanxiao Shehuo, which absorbed the nutrients of Shangdang Bangzi. It was formed in the late Qianlong period of Qing Dynasty (before 1795) and spread in Zezhou County, Jincheng City, Gaoping City (county), Yangcheng County, Lingchuan County and Qinshui County of Jincheng City, Shanxi Province.

Zezhou Yangko only uses martial arts music, not string instruments, so it is also called "dry board Yangko". Zezhou Yangko is a kind of banqiang style, most of the plays are mainly singing, and there are few confessions. Some plays even sing to the end without confessions. More than 200 plays have been performed, including beating the club, beating the sour dates, xiaoguxian, dayoutangduan, killing the dog and persuading the wife, Sanniang godson, Xiri and xinyanggong. Most of the contents focus on reflecting family conflicts, marital disputes, punishing evil and promoting good.

Zezhou Yangko with a strong local flavor, close to the masses, close to life, has a deep mass foundation. Among the people, there is a doggerel that "Yangko everywhere, Yangxi everywhere, everyone can sing a few words, sing on stage in the night, sing to the ground in the day". It can be said that the Zezhou Yangko reflects the thoughts and feelings of the Zezhou people and is an indispensable part of their cultural life.
