Chu opera used to be called ohe opera, Huangxiao Huagu opera and Xilu Huagu opera. Ohe opera, which was popular in Eastern Hubei during Daoguang period in Qing Dynasty, was integrated with folk songs, Daoqing, Zhuma, stilts and folk rap in Huangpi and Xiaogan area to form an independent local opera. It was renamed Chu opera in 1926 and has a history of more than 150 years. Chu opera is popular in Wuhan, Xiaogan, Huanggang, Jingzhou, Xianning, Yichang and Huangshi.

There are about 500 plays in Chu opera, of which more than 200 are often performed. Among them, the more important ones are Qin Xuemei's diaoxiao, Princess Yinping, chuzhai, killing dogs to scare his wife, San Shiqiu, Wu Han's killing his wife, Cai Mingfeng's Ci Dian, Ge Ma, Bai RIYUAN, nine pieces of clothes, Wu Jinji, selling cotton yarn, dumb girl's complaint and white fan The book of songs, the thought of fan, the divorce, the drawing of water, Dong Yong selling himself, etc. The tune of Chu opera is divided into three parts: the plate cavity, the minor tune and the high chamber. The plate cavity includes the cavity, the fairy chamber, the Yingshan chamber, the four Ping, the ten plum, etc. the minor tune has ten embroidery, Macheng tune, Wutong, and cotton yarn. The accompaniment instruments of Chu opera mainly include huqin, Beijing erhu, erhu, Sanxian, bangu, cymbals, gongs and gongs. The roles of Chu opera are mainly divided into three categories: Sheng, Dan and Chou, and other professions are also performed by Sheng, Dan and Chou actors. The performance of Chu opera is natural and appropriate, and the use of program means is not stick to one pattern. It has a strong local flavor. Famous actors include Shen Yunxin, Gao yuelou, Guan Xiaobin, Li yaqiao, Xiong Jianxiao, etc.

Chu opera is close to life and keeps up with the times, with rich and diverse means of expression and strong inclusiveness, which fully shows the characteristics of the local culture in Eastern Hubei. At present, Chu opera is faced with many difficulties, such as the sharp reduction of troupes, aging staff, economic difficulties, lack of successors, shrinking audience and so on. The rescue of precious materials and the skills of older generation artists is also difficult due to the lack of funds, which urgently needs the concern and support of relevant parties.
