Introduction to Lu Opera (East Lu Lu Lu Opera)

Applicant: He county, Anhui Province

Lu opera, formerly known as "Daoqi opera", originated in central Anhui Province. It has a history of more than 200 years and is one of the main local operas in Anhui Province. It is widely popular between the Yangtze River and Huaihe River in Anhui Province, the Dabie Mountains in the west of Anhui Province and some areas along the Yangtze River and the south of the Yangtze River.

Lu Opera in Anhui Province, due to different regions, formed the East, middle and West three roads. East Lu Opera centers around Wuhu (south of the Yangtze River) and Hexian (along the Yangtze River). It absorbs the performance formula and martial arts of Beijing opera, and the theme of the play changes from vulgar to elegant, which has a strong feature of water town.

Founded in 1955, Hexian Luju troupe is the only remaining performing troupe in Donglu Luju. Due to the shrinking performance market, the sharp decline of professional performance groups, the lack of inheritors and the urgent need for training of folk artists, it is in an endangered state.
