Gaochuan township is located in the southeast of Xixiang County. The town government is 73 kilometers away from the county. It borders Cha town in the north, majiawan town in the East, WULIBA town in the South and Shiquan County in the West.

Xiagaochuan market town is the seat of the town government and the political, economic and cultural center of Gaochuan. The transportation is convenient, the power supply and communication are developed, and the infrastructure is perfect. The town covers an area of 158.7 square kilometers, with a total cultivated area of 28395 mu (7950 mu of paddy field and 20445 mu of dry slope land) and a per capita cultivated area of 1.61 mu. It governs 15 villages and 88 villager groups, with a total number of 5305 households and a total population of 18733 (17551 agricultural population and 1182 non-agricultural population). The terrain of the town is mainly high mountains, with an average altitude of more than 800 meters. The annual average temperature is 16 ℃, and the annual frost free period is 256 days, with an average daily light of about 10 hours. The suitable climate conditions make the region rich in tea, so tea industry has become one of the pillar industries in the region.
