Lingshan
Lingshan Town is a town under the jurisdiction of Panyu county. It's in the middle of the county. It is 15 kilometers away from Shiqiao in the north. The town government is located in Huancheng South Road. Lingshan was formerly known as Guigang, because there is a big stone on the hill beside the village, which is very similar to the shape of a turtle. The ancients took the turtle as a "four spirits auspicious" thing, so it was named. Later generations taboo the word "Tortoise" and changed its name to Lingshan.
General situation
In the Qing Dynasty, it was the capital of Shawan. It was the first district in the Republic of China. At the beginning of the founding of the people's Republic of China, it belonged to shajiuluolian Township Office. In 1953, it separated from the first district into the Second District, and was the residence of the second district government. Lingshan district was established in the autumn of 1955. In 1957, the district was withdrawn and divided into three townships: Lingshan, yuwotou and Tung Chung. In October 1958, the three townships were merged into Lingshan regiment. In December of the same year, it was Lingshan grassroots commune. In March 1959, yuwotou and Tung Chung were called yuwotou communes. In April 1960 and January 1962, Miaobei and Shuangyi were identified as Miaobei and Shuangyi (jiubi) commune respectively, but they soon merged.
The town is narrow and long, 23 km long and 3.5 km wide from northwest to Southeast. Except Guigang, which is 21 meters above sea level, all of them are alluvial plains with crisscross river networks.
The total area is 76.01 square kilometers. There are 63914 mu of paddy fields and 3952 mu of fish ponds. It has jurisdiction over 1 residents' committee, 18 villagers' committees and 228 villagers' groups including Lingshan, Pingan, Shunhe, duntang, jiubi, Shajiao, Zisha, Yansha, Gaosha, Xinsha, Xiqiao, Shangni, xiani, Aowei, MiaoBai, miaonan, Miaoqing and Qiyi.
There is a hill in the town, named Guigang because of the big tortoise shaped stone. The ancients regarded the tortoise as the thing of gods and named it Lingshan. Lingshan township was established in 1933. Lingshan commune was established in 1958, changed to district in 1984 and established as a town in 1986. On January 25, 2006, Lingshan Town was abolished and its administrative areas were merged into Lanhe Town, Dagang Town and Dongyong town respectively.
