Donggang

Donggang Town is located in the middle part of the western coast of Pingtung County, Taiwan Province. It is adjacent to Xinyuan Township and Guding Township in the north, Nanzhou Township in the East, Ryukyu Township across the Taiwan Strait in the southwest, and linbian Township in the south. It is a fishing port in southern Taiwan and has bluefin tuna industrial resources. The town is located in the southern end of Pingtung plain. Donggang river goes out to sea from the junction of Benxiang and Xinyuan township. The flat terrain and the coastal area make it mainly engaged in fishery and agriculture. However, due to the low terrain and poor drainage, the town is vulnerable to floods and sea water irrigation. The climate is tropical monsoon. In recent years, due to the soaring price of bluefin tuna and the establishment of Mirs Bay National Scenic Spot, the tourism industry of the town has been booming.

Donggang Town, located at the mouth of Donggang River, was already a prosperous port in the Qing Dynasty and one of the three excellent ports in Taiwan. There are two theories about the origin of Donggang: first, it is named after its relative position with Xigang (today's Qijin District of Kaohsiung City) and Zhonggang (today's Linyuan District of Kaohsiung City); second, it is considered to be located to the east of Gaoping River, so it is called "Donggang".

In 1920, Taiwan's local government restructured and set up "Donggang Street" here, which was under the jurisdiction of Donggang County, Kaohsiung Prefecture. Donggang Town of Kaohsiung County was set up in the early postwar period, and was transferred to Pingtung County in 1950.

It is located at 120 degrees 26 minutes 51 seconds east longitude, 22 degrees 28 minutes 4 seconds north latitude, adjacent to Nanzhou Township in the East, Taiwan Strait in the west, Xinyuan Township, Guding Township in the north, and linbian Township in the south. The town covers an area of 294635 square kilometers. Due to its plain terrain and coastal relationship, it is suitable for farming, aquaculture and fishing. However, due to the low topography and poor drainage in the area, the town is vulnerable to floods and tides.

However, in terms of ecology, in just a few years, the bluefin tuna dropped from more than 10000 in each season in 1990 to more than 6000 in 2001, and then to more than 5000 in 2002. Although more than 8000 bluefin tunas were caught in 2003, the average weight of each bluefin tuna was 187 kg, 8% less than that of the same period in 2002.
