Chenyuantan town is located in the east of Qingtongxia City. It has jurisdiction over five administrative villages. The Yellow River is 22.7 km in length. The Yellow River Ferry passes through the urban area of Wuzhong, and the township highway connects with Yinping highway.

Before 1950, chentan belonged to Zaoyuan township of Lingwu County, and Yuantan village belonged to Zuoying township. In 1951, chentan and Yuantan villages were merged into chenyuantan Township, belonging to Wuzhong City. In 1958, chenyuantan management area was established as Wuzhong commune. In 1962, liutiaotan, horticultural farm and chenyuantan management area were merged into chenyuantan commune. In 1966, chenyuantan management area was changed into Qingtongxia county. In 1969, it was transferred into Wuzhong City. In 1984, it was restored to township. In 1997, it is located in the northwest of Litong District, with an area of 50 square kilometers and a population of 11000. It governs five administrative villages: chentan, Yuantan, Yangtan, Tangtan and liutiaotan.

In December 2004, chenyuantan township of Litong District was put under the jurisdiction of Qingtongxia City, and chenyuantan township was abolished and chenyuantan town was established. In 2006, it has jurisdiction over eight administrative villages: liutiaotan, chentan, Yuantan, Yangtan, Tangtan, wanliangtan, Buhao and shabawan.
