Mengzha town

Mengzha town is located in the west of the middle of Menghai County, 22 kilometers away from Menghai county. It is adjacent to Menghai town in the East, Menghun town in the southeast, Daluo town in the south, Xiding town in the southwest and West, and Mengman town in the north. It is one of the larger Bazi towns in Yunnan Province.

As of 2014, mengzha town has a land area of 488.45 square kilometers, 13 administrative villages and 57852 permanent residents (2017).

Mengzha town is a subtropical plateau monsoon climate, where Dai, Lahu, Hani, Bulang, Hui, WA, Han and other nationalities live. In 2014, mengzha town achieved a GDP of 916.29 million yuan.

Evolution of organizational system

Mengzha, a Dai language, means a flat dam soaked in water. Mengzha town is named after mengzheba, where the town government is located. Mengzha was originally a chieftain. When the 12th Banna was set up in 1570, mengzha, Jinglu and mengweng were the first Banna. In the 17th year of Shunzhi (1660) of Qing Dynasty, mengzhatu Qianzong was set up. in 1913, when the Sipu border Administrative Bureau was established, it was the second district administrative bureau. In 1927, Wufu county was established. In 1930, it was renamed Nanqiao county. After liberation, Nanqiao County People's government was established in May 1950. In 1953, it was renamed as Banna mengzha. In May 1958, it was changed into a county, called mengzha county. In November of the same year, it was merged with Menghai county and changed into mengzha district. In December, it was renamed Liming commune. In 1959, it was called the compound district. In 1969, it was renamed Red Star commune. In 1973, it was renamed mengzha commune. In 1984, it was renamed mengzha district. In 1987, it was renamed mengzha township. In 2003, the township was set up and renamed mengzha town.
