Lamu township was established in 1957 and merged into BOLUO Township in 1958. In 1960, it was the Lamu brigade of sijue people's commune. The township system was restored in 1961, Lamu people's commune was established in 1973 and renamed Lamo people's commune in 1981. In 1985, the commune was withdrawn to restore the township system and named Lamo township.
