In 1375, Rongxi town belonged to zhimaziping, Rongxi county. In July 2001, it was changed from Rongxi township to Rongxi town. In the 29th year of Jiajing reign of the Qing Dynasty (1550), zhimaziping chief of Rongxi was removed and xuanweisi of Youyang was established in Zhili. In the first year of Qianlong (1736), Xiushan was set up as a county. Rongxi was delimited from Youyang and belonged to riqili of Xiushan County.

In 1933, it belonged to riqili township. In May 1938, Rongxi town was established. In 1941, Rongxi town was changed into Rongxi township.

In September 1958, Rongxi township was changed into Rongxi commune.

In November 1983, Rongxi township was changed into Rongxi commune.

In July 2001, Rongxi township was changed from township to town.
