Dongao Town, belonging to Wanning City, Hainan Province, is located in the southeast of Wanning City, bordering on the South China Sea in the East and south, Liji town in the west, Changfeng town in the northwest and Wancheng town in the north. The maximum distance from east to west is 7.8 kilometers, and the maximum distance from north to south is 10.5 kilometers, with a total area of 93.48 square kilometers.

In July 1957, Dongao township was established. In October 1958, it was returned to Wanning commune. In February 1987, it was changed into Dong'ao town. In 2018, the registered residence population was 43254. As of June 2020, Dong'ao town has jurisdiction over 19 administrative villages and another village level unit. The town people's government is located in Donglong street, Dong'ao market.

From 1950 to June 1957, it belonged to Wanning District 1 (Xinhua Village was under the jurisdiction of Lingshui County, and in 1960, it belonged to Wanning county).
