Shanghu Town, belonging to Luhe County, Shanwei City, Guangdong Province, is located in the southwest of Luhe County, about 15 kilometers away from the county seat. It is divided into two parts: helao and Shanghu. The total area of the town is 111.14 square kilometers. In late 2018, the number of registered residence residents in Shanghai was 39837. As of June 2020, Shanghu town has jurisdiction over 1 community and 13 administrative villages.

In 2018, there were 17 industrial enterprises in Shanghu Town, and 18 comprehensive stores or supermarkets with a business area of more than 50 square meters.

Historical evolution

Before 1974, it belonged to Hetian people's commune of Lufeng County.

In January 1984, it was changed to district.

Puppet show

Puppet show in Luhe county is a kind of string puppet, commonly known as "chaitouga" or "chaitougui". It was introduced from Shanghang, Fujian Province in 1751 and has a history of more than 260 years. The roles of Luodong puppet show include Sheng, Dan, Jing, Mo, Chou, etc. Its performance is exquisite, from the characters' steps, manners, expressions, eyes to emotional reactions, stunts and so on. In addition to Chinese music, the accompaniment music also absorbs folk tunes and Hakka folk songs. The singing style is mainly Hakka folk songs, and the recitation is in Hakka language, so the content is easy to understand. The performances of Luodong Puppet Troupe are all about spreading morality, upholding harmony, praising righteousness, and whipping evil. The representative plays include Hu Gongzi on Qinglong mountain, double lions rolling dragon, and Li dongniang.

Red Culture

Shanghu was the rear area of hailufeng red Soviet regime during the great revolution and land reform. Peng Pai, Yang Qishan, Dong Lang, Gu Dacun, Xie Fei, Zheng Wansheng and ye zuoshu all directed the fighting here. During the war of liberation, it was the guerrilla area of Lufeng northwest self defense brigade, the site of the second division of the Red Army during the great revolution, and the site of hailuzi county Party committee and the county Soviet government. It was an old revolutionary base.
