Houtang Yao nationality township is located in the southeast of Chenxi County, bordering Simeng town of Xupu County in the East, sumuxi Yao nationality township in the south, Huangxikou town in the west, Jiangkou Town of Xupu County in the north, 9.8 km from north to south, 8.8 km from east to west. The township government is located in Lianhua village, 87 km from Chenyang town.

Houtang Yao nationality township is located in the southeast of Chenxi County, bordering Simeng township of Xupu County in the East, sumuxi Yao nationality township in the south, Huangxikou town in the west, Jiangkou Town of Xupu County in the north, 9.8 km from north to south, 8.8 km from east to west. The township government is located in Lianhua village, 87 km from Chenyang town. The total land area of the township is 69.24 square kilometers (2017), including 9690 mu of cultivated land (8670 mu of paddy field and 1020 mu of dry land), 2373 mu of water area and 80207 mu of mountainous area. The whole terrain is high in the north and low in the south, tilting from west to East.
natural resources
Xianrentang and Tianmen Mountain in the northwest of the township stretch for more than 30 kilometers, with an altitude of more than 500 meters. They are timber forest and rape forest producing areas, with a timber stock of 48000 cubic meters, an area of more than 26000 mu of Camellia oleifera forest, and annual oil production of about 120000 Jin. The small basin in the southeast is the grain producing area of the whole township. The main mineral resources are silicon, gold, antimony, iron and sulfur. In particular, silica (commonly known as baihuoyan) is rich in reserves. There is a rock mountain from Songjia to Tujia, which is about 2000 meters long, 60 meters wide and 150 meters thick, with a reserve of 50 million tons. There is basically no cover, and the bottom of the rock is associated with gold. The quality of silica is excellent, containing 98% silicon dioxide. It can produce industrial silicon and floor tile decorative board, and has mining value.
Historical evolution
The township was established earlier and belonged to Taihe Township in the period of the Republic of China. Houtang township was set up in 1953, Fudong, lingtuoyuan and zaoziping townships were merged in 1956, and the township was abandoned in September 1958 and merged into the universe people's commune. Houtang people's commune was established in 1961 and renamed houtang Township in 1984. In 1989, with the approval of the provincial people's government, Houtang township was abolished and houtang Yao township was established. At that time, 16 administrative villages were under the jurisdiction of Wangjia, Songlai, Liuli, Yanmen, Jinqiao, rangshui, Qiantang, xuanwan, Lianhua, Xintian, sihuaxi, Yuanping, Ertang, Daping, Danshan and Jiyan. In 1993, chayuanping village in sumuxi Yao township was included in houtang Yao township. At present, it has jurisdiction over 17 administrative villages and 153 villager groups. According to the statistics at the end of 1995, there are 3813 households and 15548 people in the township, including 7892 Yao people, accounting for 50.76% of the total population.
traffic
The township is far away from the county, with inconvenient transportation. There is only one road from Huangxikou town to the county, which runs through Lianhua, Qiantang, Jinqiao and Wangjia villages. There are 8 village level simple highways, 38 km in length. Liuli, Daping, chayuanping village level highways and houtang to Simeng Township Duantou highway in Xupu County have been completed. It's about 45 minutes' drive from Xupu County, and there are more than 10 cars to and from houtang to Xupu County every day
economic development
The economy of the township is dominated by agriculture, with a per capita cultivated area of 0.62 mu. In 1995, the total output value of industry and agriculture was 18.92 million yuan, of which the total output value of agriculture was 12.12 million yuan, accounting for 64% of the total output value. Rice is the main agricultural production, with double cropping rice about 6000 mu throughout the year. The agricultural infrastructure is good. There are 1 small (1) reservoir, 5 small (2) reservoirs, 21 main mountain ponds, and 4 streams. The area of paddy field is more than 5700 mu.
