The township of Jiang Hua Township, Yongzhou, Hunan, is located in the border between Hunan, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, and is located in the southeast of Yongzhou Yao Autonomous County. It is the most remote Township in the Yao Autonomous County of Yongzhou, with an area of 120.32 square kilometers, registered residence of 5483 people (2018), and 7 administrative villages (2019).

Historical evolution

The folk culture of Daxi Township includes paper dragon dance, incense fire dragon dance, long drum dance and yangko dance. The most amazing is "going to Dao mountain and crossing the sea of fire".

Long drum

Long drum dance is popular in Daxi Township, which is a typical representative of Yao folk songs and dances. During the performance, the drummer holds the waist of the drum with his left hand and turns it up and down. Then his right hand slaps it and beats it while dancing. The main forms of performance are four person dance, two person dance and so on. The main movements are building houses, making drums, playing drums, simulating animals, offering sacrifices and so on. Vigorous dance, simple style. Some of them can dance long drum on a table of eight immortals, playing and dancing at the same time. Usually accompanied by suona, gongs and drums, sometimes singing "Pan Wang Song" to boost the fun.

Go to daoshan and cross the sea of fire

There is a folk performance in Daxi Township called "going up the knife mountain and down the sea of fire". The performers climb up on the sharp knife ladder, but their bare feet are safe. Barefoot, they walk through the red burning coals without any injury.

"Dujie" is the most ceremonious adult traditional etiquette in Yao people's life. It carries out the moral education of the later generations in the aspects of ethnic history, clan rules, etiquette and discipline through the traditional way handed down from ancient times. Some superstitious rituals in "Dujie" have been abolished by Yao people, but meaningful activities are still preserved. "Shangdaoshan" is one of the three commandments of Dujie, and also the 15th item of Dujie. There are two kinds of swords and ladders used by the Yao people in Jianghua. In the west of the Ling Dynasty, there are seven (ladder) swords or nine swords, which are shaped like ladders. Generally, they can be used as ladders when they are passed on to the two realms. In the east of the Ling Dynasty, there are 36 swords, which are usually inserted into both sides of a big tree, and they can only go up to the three realms. If you don't seal the sword, you can't teach people; if you don't finish all the Dharma, you can't teach people.
