The township covers an area of 35 square kilometers (2017), with a water surface of 8.61 square kilometers and a total population of 30886 people (2017). It was originally a silting island of Dongting Lake, with several abandoned embankments such as loess, Taihe and Donghe. In 1952, when the South Dongting Lake was completed, this large area of land was enclosed and tied into a embankment, and it was built as yanglinzhai farm, which was subordinate to the Provincial Bureau of agricultural reclamation. It was handed over to Xiangyin County in 1969. In the same year, it received 15000 immigrants from Zhexi reservoir in Xinhua County and changed them into yanglinzhai commune. It was changed to township in 1984. In 1996, with an area of 29 square kilometers and a population of 20000, the township government was stationed in huangtaigang, with jurisdiction over the residents' committee of huangtaigang and 13 administrative villages including Yuantan, huangtaigang, zhoujiatai, zongshitan, baiyanghu, shaheiding, yangyanggang, Wangjiahe, jiangjiadu, lianzikou, Hehu, taihewei and Donghe.
