Gutang town

Gutang town is a town under the jurisdiction of Lianxi District, Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province. It is located at the east foot of Lushan Mountain and the shore of Poyang Lake, 13 kilometers away from Jiujiang City.

The whole town is surrounded by water on three sides and mountains on one side. The nine star highway passes through the town. It is adjacent to Poyang Lake in the East, across the lake from Hukou County, Gushan Lake in the south, and Haihui town. It is adjacent to Weijia town in the west, Zhuqiao Village and Xinhua Village in the west, niangchi River in the north, and Kaitian village in yujiahe township. The climate is mild all year round. The town covers an area of 50 square kilometers, with water area of more than 5000 mu, arable area of more than 13000 Mu and population of 35580. It has jurisdiction over 8 administrative villages, 2 neighborhood committees (Gutang community, Jiujiang Chemical Fiber Factory Community) and 13 Township Enterprises.

In October 2019, Gutang town was selected as one of the "Top 1000 towns with comprehensive strength in China in 2019".

Historical evolution

In 1957, it belonged to ZhouLing and Dengqiao townships. In 1959, it was changed into ZhouLing commune. In 1984, it was changed into ZhouLing township. In 1997, it covers an area of 48 square kilometers and has a population of 16000. It governs nine administrative villages, namely ZhouLing, Cailing, Yanhu, Shahu, guangqiao, Dengqiao, Xiangji, Gushan and Gutang. The township government is located in zhoujialing, 16 kilometers away from the district government. On March 4, 1999, the system of ZhouLing township was abolished, the system of town was established, and the name was changed to Gutang town. Gutang town is one of the four ancient towns in Jiangxi Province, formed in the Three Kingdoms and Western Jin Dynasty, with a long history and culture and superior geographical location. In 1723, the Jiujiang chaoguan and Gutang sub customs were set up. The geographical advantages of the water transportation hub and the important position of goods distribution center of Gutang were more prominent. In its heyday, Gutang had thousands of business houses and a population of more than 20000, which was beyond the ancient city Xunyang. before the founding of new China, it belonged to Gutang Township, Jiujiang county. at the beginning of the founding of new China, it was divided into Jiuhua, Xiangji, Shahu, Yanhu, Lingbei, Dengqiao Township and Gutang town. In 1957, ZhouLing and Dengqiao townships were set up. In 1958, ZhouLing commune was established. in 1977, it was zoned to jurisdiction Jiujiang City. In May 1980, it belonged to the suburb of Jiujiang City (later renamed Lushan District, now Lianxi District). In 1984, it was restored to ZhouLing township. in 1999, the township was removed to build a town, which was renamed Gutang town.

In the town, there are 190jiang chemical fiber factory, one of the top 500 industrial enterprises in China, and Singapore Golden Eagle Group Saideli (Jiangxi) Chemical Fiber Co., Ltd., the largest wholly foreign-owned enterprise in Jiangxi Province.
