Putuoshan town

Putuo Mountain is located in the eastern sea area of Zhoushan Archipelago. It is composed of two inhabited islands, Putuo Mountain and Luojia mountain, and some uninhabited islands and reefs. Mount Putuo is one of the four famous Buddhist mountains in China. It has a long history of religious culture and rich natural and cultural landscapes. Putuo Mountain Buddhism is a famous Taoist temple for Guanyin Bodhisattva. It is said that after Liang Zhenming refused to go to Guanyin Temple in the Five Dynasties, temples and awnings were built one after another in successive dynasties. The temple buildings are scattered on the seashore in the mountains, integrated with the sea sky scenery, forming a famous tourist attraction with unique island scenery and rich Buddhist culture. It is known as the "sea sky Buddha kingdom" and is well-known at home and abroad.

In October 2019, Putuoshan town was selected as one of the "Top 1000 towns with comprehensive strength in China in 2019". On July 29, 2020, it will be included in the list of national health towns (counties) to be reconfirmed in 2019.

Historical evolution

In May 1950, Putuo Mountain established the Township People's government, and in March 1989, it was changed from township to town. The town government is located in pantuo'an (119 meicen Road). The whole mountain governs four administrative villages, including Xishan residential area, Qianshan, Zhongshan, Hexing and Longwan, and 51 natural villages, with a resident population of 10318 (2017). Before the reform and opening-up, the economy of Putuoshan town was "agriculture oriented, agriculture and fishery oriented", "forestry oriented, forestry and grain oriented". After the reform and opening up, the construction of Putuo Mountain scenic spot is changing with each passing day. In 1982, it was first announced as one of 44 national scenic spots by the State Council. After that, it has successively realized the national level "health mountain, safety mountain, civilization mountain", national 5A scenic spot, national civilized tourism scenic spot and national ISO14001 environmental management system demonstration area.

In the past 20 years, Putuoshan town has been advancing with the times. In recent years, with the influence and utilization of the "spring of Mount Putuo" Tourism Festival, "Buddhist wedding" and "Guanyin Culture Festival", Putuoshan Town, together with Shenjiamen, a famous fishing town, and Zhujiajian, a key scenic spot, has formed the golden triangle and Golden Coast Tourism Area. It has actively carried out the activities of "creating first-class scenic spots and building a well-off society".
