In the Western Han Dynasty, the system of Qin Dynasty was adopted, and in the Eastern Han Dynasty, Yanmen county was moved to the South and became Dingxiang County.

At the end of the Han Dynasty, all counties were abolished, and Shanwu county was set up in the Northern Wei Dynasty.

After Tang Dynasty, it was the site of Yunzhong county.

In the 25th year of Hongwu (1392) of Ming Dynasty, the frontier guard was set up. In the 7th year of Yongle (1409), the Yulin guard outside the frontier was merged into Youwei, which was renamed youyulin Wei, belonging to Datong Prefecture.

It was named youyuwei in the early Qing Dynasty.

In the third year of Yongzheng reign of Qing Dynasty (1725), it was Xuansheng County, called Youyu county. It belonged to shuoping Prefecture, where Youyu was established.

In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the government was abandoned and the county was left behind.

At the beginning of the people's Republic of China, it belonged to Chahar province and Yanbei district.

In 1958, it merged with Zuoyun County and was called Zuoyun County.
