Emergency treatment of family choking

Choking is one of the common causes of sudden death in the elderly. Choking often occurs as follows:

When eating, they can't speak suddenly and have a painful expression of suffocation; the choker usually presses his hand on his neck or chest and uses his fingers to his mouth; in case of partial airway obstruction, he may have a severe cough with intermittent wheezing.

There is a simple method for treating choking food

Standing or sitting position can be used for conscious patients. The rescuer stands behind the patient, embraces the patient with both arms, clenches his fist with one hand, makes the prominent point of thumb metacarpal joint support the patient's abdominal midline and supraumbilical part, presses the palm of the other hand on his fist, and pushes and impacts it inward and upward for 6-10 times continuously (pay attention not to hurt his ribs).

The patient who fell to the ground in a coma was in supine position. The rescuer straddled the patient's hip and pushed and impacted the upper part of the navel according to the upper method. In this way, the impact on the upper abdomen is equivalent to a sudden increase in intra-abdominal pressure, which can elevate the diaphragm, rapidly increase the airway pressure, force the intra-abdominal air out, and make the food (or other foreign bodies) blocking the trachea move up and be expelled. If it doesn't work, it can be done several times after a few seconds, causing a man-made cough, so that the food lumps can be washed out.
