Location

The Church of Notre Dame's snow palace, built in 1637 at the fort of dongwangyangshan (also known as Songshan), the highest in Australia, is a classic Portuguese yellow and white design with a simple beauty.

The chapel on the side of the lighthouse is called the Church of Notre Dame. The main hall is rectangular, 16 meters long and 4.7 meters wide. The ridge is more than 7 meters high and the cornice is 4.8 meters high. There is a mourning room on the right side of the main altar, and the choir is on the upper layer of the entrance, which is extremely narrow. The facade design of the church is relatively simple, with triangular mountain flowers on both sides of the pilaster, and the entrance gate is designed in the same way. The vaults and walls of the church are painted with color murals, whose painting skills are integrated with Chinese and Western art to highlight the value of the church.

The ceiling of the Church of Notre Dame is arched, and the walls are painted with color murals of biblical stories and characters. The lines of the murals in the mourning room are beautiful and lively, blending Chinese painting techniques and Western colors, and harmonizing Chinese and Western culture and art. The murals are painted with designs of Maria, Saint Anthony, lion, double headed eagle and peony, which are of great artistic value and ornamental value.

Historical evolution

The Church of Notre Dame was built in 1622. When the Dutch invaded Macao, it is said that the Virgin Mary stepped out of the chapel and opened her cloak to resist the enemy's gun attack.

The present church was built in 1637. The Church of Notre Dame's snow hall contains the images and portraits of Notre Dame of snow (nossa senhorada Guia) and Saint John the Baptist who escorts the navigation.

In 1996, when the Australian and Portuguese government carried out the internal protection and restoration project of the church, mural remains were found. After textual research, it is found that the mural is a fusion of Chinese and Western culture and art, which is a rare work of art in South China. He lizhuan, director of the Bureau of culture, pointed out that the government has carried out the restoration strictly in accordance with the principle of "protecting the integrity and authenticity of the original art of murals". Through in-depth historical research, the government has carried out laboratory analysis on the "marl water" and pigments in each layer, and carried out a number of feasibility studies and practices on the materials and pigments used. Finally, the mural patterns and figures buried in the dust have been restored It's a great image.

In 1992, it was also rated as one of the Eight Sights of Macao by Macao associations.

In 1996, the government carried out the internal protection and restoration project of the sanctuary, and found the remains of murals. The biblical stories and characters on the murals use the techniques of Chinese painting, and the whole picture is a fusion of Chinese and Western culture and art. This feature is unique among many churches in the region.

Since 1998, experts have begun the restoration work of murals, painting and repairing the murals one by one, so as to reproduce the original appearance of the murals.

On July 24, 2001, the Macao Cultural Bureau held a restoration ceremony for the mourning room of Notre Dame snow hall church.
