Xidan Cultural Square

Xidan Cultural Plaza is located in the northeast of Xidan intersection, Xicheng District, Beijing, with a total scale of 42599 square meters. It is the only large green square on Chang'an Street and a diversified commercial zone integrating shopping, sports, entertainment and leisure.

On the morning of August 28, 2018, Xicheng District announced the specific plan for the transformation of the square. The renovation project will present the ground square in October 2019.

geographical position

Xidan Culture Plaza is located in the northeast of Xidan intersection, Xicheng District, Beijing, with Changan Street in the South and Times Square in the distance; Zhongyou department store in the north; famous book building in the East and Bank of China building with excellent architectural features in the West. Looking down on it, the green lawn, neat sidewalk, and colorful lights outline a concise and clear square effect; looking down on it, the stage, sculpture, disc, and road combine to form a leisure landscape.

Planning layout

It covers a total area of 15000 square meters and a total construction area of 39990 square meters. ·The square covers an area of 15000 square meters with a total investment of 540 million yuan.

·The center of the square is 13 meters high and 7 meters in diameter. The super white tempered glass cone is the landmark of the square.

·The northeast part of the square is sloping green space. ·There are two floors above ground and underground. ·The South and west of chessboard green square are brick corridors of red, yellow and gray squares along the chessboard line.

Construction and transformation

2008

Many problems of the old square are highlighted in the use. For example, the panoramic view of the sunken square from the top view is actually not beautiful. The commercial buildings in the sunken square are limited for a long time, and the glass cone has no special function and symbolic significance. The appearance of the sunken square makes the scale of the whole Xidan Cultural Square disordered, and the huge square is divided into countless small lanes, which often causes pedestrians to cross the lawn. As time goes by, the sunken area in the center of the square becomes an obstacle to the whole square, which has no greater use.

On the eve of the 2008 Olympic Games, Xidan Cultural Square has been completely transformed. The glass spire, the original representative structure, has been removed and replaced by an open fountain. The sinking element in the center of the square is cancelled and replaced by the flat and wide rubble pavement, which greatly increases the sense of scale of the square. The lawn in the South has been canceled, and an array of trees and lighting lamps have been set up, making the whole square much wider than before. The southernmost archway was rebuilt after years of demolition, highlighting Chinese elements. It shows the wide and generous characteristic of Beijing square.

2018

On the morning of August 28, 2018, Xicheng District announced the specific plan for the transformation of the square. The existing underground four floors of the square will be reduced to three floors, and the green area of the square will be increased to 10000 square meters. At the same time, underground parking spaces will be increased to improve the surrounding traffic conditions.

Xidan culture square is located in the northeast of Xidan intersection, with a total scale of 42599 square meters. This transformation will be carried out from three aspects: reduction, quality improvement and greening. After the transformation, Xidan Cultural Plaza will change the project orientation of the previous commodity distribution center, adjust the commercial format with the theme of cultural creativity, improve the above ground and underground traffic organization, and create a multi-functional urban public living room integrating city square, green space, transportation hub, cultural communication and commercial services.

According to the project planning, the total construction scale of Xidan Cultural Plaza will be reduced by about 9000 square meters, and the commercial area will be reduced by about 10000 square meters. At the same time, the ground landscape was comprehensively transformed, and the matching method of different ages and multiple layers was adopted to increase the plant landscape, so that the square green area increased to more than 10000 square meters.

Optimizing the traffic organization above and under the ground is also the key content of this transformation. The third underground floor of the square is set as a parking lot to alleviate the problem of parking around. Underground will connect with the surrounding business and subway, expand public space and reduce traffic congestion on the ground.

The renovation project will present the ground square in October 2019.
