Shanfu temple is the largest temple complex in Beihai. It used to be Taisu hall in Ming Dynasty, and it was the place for royal family members to spend summer. In 1742, it was used as the silkworm Hall of the first silkworm altar. Empress Xiaozhuang of the Qing Dynasty once held a memorial ceremony here after her death. In 1746, Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty respected his mother's wish and ordered that it be changed into a Buddhist temple, which imitated the scale of Longxing Temple in Zhengding County of Hebei Province and was given the name of Shanfu temple.
