Master Hongyi (1880-1942), surnamed Li and named Wentao, was born in Tianjin in Pinghu, Zhejiang Province. He was proficient in poetry, drama, music, calligraphy, fine arts and seal cutting all his life, and attached great importance to the development of Nanshan Buddhism. He was an outstanding master of art, patriotic educator and a generation of eminent monks in modern China.
He became a monk at Dinghui temple in Hupao, Hangzhou in 1918, and died in Wenling nursing home in Quanzhou on October 13, 1942. The relic was buried in Yuanji and Dinghui temple in Hangzhou.
