The drum tower was built in the 12th year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty. It was once the commercial and cultural center of Kaifeng. The drum tower is symmetrical from east to west, on the same line, very dignified and neat.
In the late Ming Dynasty, the governor of Henan thought that the bell tower and Drum Tower had hindered the fengshui of the governor's Yamen. He ordered that the bells and drums on the second floor of the bell tower and drum tower should be exchanged, and the bell tower should be changed into the drum tower, and the drum tower into the bell tower.
It has been preserved since it was built in the Ming Dynasty, until it was destroyed in the war when Kaifeng was liberated in 1948, leaving only one abutment. In 1976, even the foundation was demolished. The drum tower seen today was rebuilt in 2013.
Gulou square is the largest night market in Kaifeng, and also a must for tourists to and from Kaifeng. Whenever night falls, on both sides of the square, uniform snack trucks are arranged in the catering area.
