Profile
Lu simian (1884-1957), a native of Changzhou, was born in a scholarly family. His ancestor, Lu Gong, was the number one prime minister in the early Qing Dynasty. When he was 6 years old, he studied with his teacher. When he was 8 years old, his mother Cheng began to interpret the compendium of the official history of Gangjian for him. At ordinary times, he was strictly supervised and cultivated his interest in reading history. At the age of 16, he began to study official history systematically. He read the twenty four histories three times in his life. Since 1905, he has been teaching in Xishan school, Suzhou Soochow University, Changzhou University, Shenyang Normal University and Shanghai Hujiang University. After 1926, he was the director of the History Department of Shanghai Guanghua University. During the Anti Japanese War, he returned to Changzhou to write books and taught in Fuhua and Qingyun. In 1951, he was a first-class professor in the History Department of East China Normal University. Si Mian died in Shanghai in 1957. He devoted all his life to the research and teaching of historiography and enjoyed a high reputation in the field of historiography. There are a lot of works, such as the history of vernacular, the changes of Chinese characters, the general history of China written by Lu, the history of pre Qin, the history of Qin and Han Dynasties, the history of the two Jin Dynasties, the history of the southern and Northern Dynasties, the history of the Chinese nation, etc. The posthumous manuscripts compiled and published by later generations include the history of Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties, Lu simian's notes on reading history, and three kinds of modern history. Among them, vernacular history of China is a general history of China with the largest circulation in China from 1920s to 1930s. It has been used as a teaching material for many universities for a long time and is known as the "gateway and ladder" for young people to learn history.
Introduction to former residence
When the former residence was registered in 1937, the property owner was "Lv Chengzhi" (Chengzhi is the word of LV Simian), covering an area of 2.058 mu. It is adjacent to Shizi street in the south, folk houses in the north and West, and the neighborhood office of kuqian street in the East. It is less than 50 meters east of Jinling middle road. Lu simian's father once pawned the east house to others, and the whole family lived in the west house. It was not until the late period of the Anti Japanese war that Lu simian took back his own use. After liberation, part of the former residence houses (a total of 10) were garrisoned. On May 31, 1952, LV simian submitted a letter to the Civil Affairs Department of Changzhou municipal government, asking for the house to be returned due to poor condition. It can be inferred that Lu simian's former residence was built in the early 1850s (the early years of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty) when his grandfather Lu Mao was the magistrate of Fengxin County in Jiangxi Province. At present, there are 21 houses with 4 entrances, all of which are brick and wood structures built on hard hills in the Qing Dynasty. From the south to the north, they are: the first entrance house is near Shizi street; the second entrance hall has three rooms, with Fanxuan behind; the third entrance hall has one bedroom in the East and one bedroom in the West. LV Simian was born in the West bedroom, where he lived and studied when he was a child; the fourth entrance hall has three rooms and two floors. At the east end of the patio in front of the building, there is a wing room and an East bedroom, which contains more than 20 boxes of ancient books, books, calligraphy and paintings, daily necessities, etc. collected by Lu simian. In December 1987, the Municipal People's government announced it as a cultural relic protection unit of Changzhou City. It has been restored by the office of the Municipal Administration of cultural relics. The Redwood horizontal plaque "Lu simian's former residence" was written by Zhou Gucheng, a famous historian, and is open to the public. There is an academic exhibition of Lu simian's life.
