Tangfang Street Catholic Church
Tangfang Street Catholic Church was first built by Ming Dynasty official Wang Zheng. At that time, it was named "chongyitang". Since then, Catholicism has a solid foothold in Xi'an.
If we don't count the development of Nestorianism in Tang Dynasty, Tangfang Catholic Church, located in the city wall of Xi'an, can be said to be the earliest Christian Church in Xi'an.
The church was first invested and built by Wang Zheng, an official of the Ming Dynasty. At that time, it was named "chongyitang". Since then, Catholicism has a solid foothold in Xi'an.
On the one hand, the church was established because Xi'an was an important city on the Silk Road of the Ming Dynasty, where European missionaries needed to pass if they entered China by land; on the other hand, it was because of the official Wang Zheng of the Ming Dynasty mentioned above. Wang Zheng was a native of Jingyang, Shaanxi Province. He had close contacts with Matteo Ricci, Tang ruowang and other missionaries who came to China at that time and was baptized. In order that missionaries could have a foothold in Shaanxi, the church was built.
