Lao Daowai

Laodaowai is the birthplace of Harbin. A hundred years ago, there were only two districts in Harbin. The eastern district was Daoli and Nangang, where foreigners lived. The western district was Daowai, where Chinese people lived. According to historical records, at the beginning of the 20th century, a group of smart, intelligent and courageous national industrial and commercial elites took the lead in opening shops and industries in nan'erdao street and building houses in the hinterland outside the road. When building the building, those Chinese craftsmen imitated the western style houses in Daoli and Nangang one after another, and adopted Chinese architectural techniques, such as clear water brick wall, lime pointing, brick wood structure and carved eaves, to build a typical Chinese "small western style building" - European style facade and Chinese style courtyard.

After visiting Harbin, the experts who selected the UN Habitat model award and international architectural art experts commented that the value of this building complex is higher than that of central street in terms of the number of Baroque buildings and its historical massiveness. The only condition for Harbin to apply for the UN Habitat Award is the Chinese Baroque building area outside the old road.

Outside laodaowai, there is the largest "Chinese Baroque" building block in China. These old houses, which have gone through a hundred years of vicissitudes, have western appearance, but there are Chinese style courtyards hidden inside. They are an original architectural form created by Harbin people. From the intersection of Jingyang street and Jingyu Street, Daowai Tongshang City Reserve extends eastward to Daowai Shidao street, north to Shengping street and south to Nanxun street. Here, you can taste the disappearing traditional Harbin snacks. Those time-honored brands growing up with Harbin people: Lao Dingfeng, fan Jiyong, Zhang baopu, Zhang FEIBA...
