Former site of governor Yamen in Jiangsu Province
The former site of Jiangsu governor's Yamen is located in Shuyuan lane of Suzhou ancient city, which is the place where Jiangsu governor handled government affairs in Qing Dynasty.
The former site of the governor's Yamen was originally the location of Heshan Academy. In the Ming Dynasty, the governor was appointed as the highest local officer, and the Academy was changed into the Yamen in Yongle period. During the 480 years from Xuande in Ming Dynasty to Qianlong in Qing Dynasty, there were many famous officials, such as Zhou Chen, Hai Rui, Tang bin, Zhang boxing, Lin Zexu and so on.
The existing building was rebuilt in 1866 and listed as a cultural relic protection unit in Suzhou in 1982. Due to the disrepair for a long time, the building walls, doors and windows were seriously damaged. Based on the principle of repairing the old as before, Suzhou city carried out protective rush repair on the former site of the governor's Yamen in July 2005. The original components were used as much as possible in this renovation. The hall, hall, garden, screen wall and the Qing Dynasty painting on the door beam were restored as before. The whole building was renovated and the historical original appearance of the governor's Yamen was restored.
