Shilu

Shilu was built in 1920s. It has three floors and the top floor is in the style of European castle. It is the most typical existing sanhetu watchtower. The wall is yellowish. The upper part of the watchtower is in the style of European castle. There is a "swallow's nest" at the four corners, and there are gun holes in the nest. Sanhetu Diaolou is made of red mud, lime, sugar or glutinous rice. It is rammed layer by layer. The wall is generally more than one foot thick. Its firmness is comparable to that of reinforced concrete, and the interior is cooler than that of cement house. It is said that Lou Zhu Guan Yiwen is the president of the first farmers' Association in Kaiping, and Shi Lou is a place to discuss the affairs of the farmers' Association and carry out underground activities of the party.

Shilu

Built in 1924, it is located in Xiabian village, Houshan village committee, Baihe Town, Kaiping City, Guangdong Province. The building is five stories high, including three standard floors, two pavilions at the top, a colonnade front on the fourth floor, and a "swallow's nest" at the four corners with gun holes. The top floor is European castle style, and the doors and windows are made of thick iron plate, which is narrow. The wall of the standard layer is made of "sanhetu" (yellow mud, lime, sand mixed with yellow sugar or glutinous rice). It is said that these "sanhetu" need to be retted for more than a year before they can be used for building, so they are very strong. During retting, it should be turned regularly to prevent hardening. It is the representative work of "sanhetu" watchtower.

Construction process

In addition to the more than ten "muddy workers" led by "muddy water" of Houshan Xin'an, the owner Guan Yiwen and his family all took part in the construction. The iron branches and plates used in the building were given by relatives of Guan Yiwen's iron shop.

Architectural background

In the second half of 1946, the Kuomintang reactionaries brazenly provoked a civil war and attacked our Liberated Areas on a large scale. The local reactionary forces in Enping also wanted to take the opportunity to eliminate our underground Party organizations. In order to work safely and better, Li Junjie, the contact person of the Kaiping party organization, assigned Li Keping (pseudonym Li Guoguang), the special commissioner of the Enping party organization, to Qinghua primary school not far from Enping, where the Kaiping party organization runs in the ancestral temple of Chang Rong in Xiabian village as the principal to guide the work of the Enping party organization. In November, the higher Party organization transferred Li Keping's lover, Qu Huiying, from Jiangmen He taught in Qinghua primary school and assisted Li Keping in his work.

The working conditions of Li Keping and his wife in Qinghua primary school are very hard. The house they live in is very small, dark and wet. Guan Yiwen's daughter-in-law, Ciqu MA (she has a daughter named Ciqu, so people call her Ciqu MA), is upright, kind-hearted and helpful. When she knew the difficulties of Li Keping and his wife, she offered to let them live in Shilu and another building behind the village. After living in Shilu, Li Keping's family taught during the day, carried out revolutionary propaganda activities at night, and dealt with documents organized by the Enping party. Once, the superior sent Huang Lun and Tang Jintao (female) to send a radio set to Shilu for repair. After the repair, in order to avoid the suspicion of the enemy, Qu Huiying sent the radio set to the headquarters of our central Guangdong army safely under the cover of her uncle and sister-in-law visiting relatives.
