Tuogu Mosque

Tuogu mosque is located in Tuogu village, Taoyuan Hui nationality township, about 10 kilometers east of Ludian County, Zhaotong City. It was built in 1730. It is surrounded by fertile fields, winding riverbanks, shady trees, hills and quiet environment. It is one of the five ancient temples in Yunnan Province. It is regarded as the ancestral temple and the key cultural relic protection unit in Yunnan Province.

Historical evolution

According to the inscriptions in the temple, the Tuogu mosque was built in 1730 A.D. in the eighth year of Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty. Ma Pingchan Gong and Ma pingchi Gong, the ancestors of the surname Ma of CAI Jiadi, the military officer of the Qing Dynasty, obtained the fiefdom of Tuogu area because of their war achievements. Therefore, they took the lead in donating money to build the main hall of the temple.

In 2014, it was still intact after the Ludian Ms6.5 earthquake.

The whole temple consists of main hall, wake-up building, tireless hall, back Pavilion, wing room, water room, and Zhaobi. There are more than 30 halls, pavilions, and pavilions. The temple is famous for its unique construction technology and long history. It is a key cultural relic protection unit at the provincial level.

Main buildings

Main hall

The main hall is the main building of the whole temple, about 13 meters high, 18 meters long and 15 meters wide, supported by 36 columns. In the center of the hall is a horizontal plaque with the words "happy heaven". The hall can accommodate nearly 300 people. There are two beams in the hall, which are supported by only four small thin square timbers. The marvelous construction and exquisite craftsmanship of the beams are amazing. The eaves on the top of the hall are tilted at four corners with extraordinary bearing.

Wake up building

The awakening building, which means calling for quick worship, is the most wonderful and eye-catching place in the temple. Big round wooden columns stand upright among them and lift up the beams and rafters. At first glance, it looks like the columns reach the top, but in fact, it is not. It is divided into five layers, and the wooden columns decrease layer by layer. 1、 There are twenty-eight on the second floor, ten on the third and fourth floors, and only six on the fifth floor. These columns and beams are connected alternately to form the framework of the lower rectangle and the upper hexagon, supporting the three-story eaves of the main Pavilion. It is amazing that the whole building is not connected by a single nail, which fully reflects the intelligence and superb architectural skills of the workers.

On the back of the second floor of the wake-up building, under the eaves facing the main hall, there is a huge plaque with four characters of "PuCi Wanyou", which is a gift from ye Daxiong, the hereditary commander of Zhaotong Prefecture in 1746.

The couplet in the temple: "the floor plan emphasizes the Huihua tree as a gift", vividly summarizes the actual appearance and architectural features of the mosque.

Wing room

After the wake-up building, there is a large courtyard in the middle and wing rooms on both sides. The wing room is now used for the main temple, religious Management Committee and teaching room. The courtyard is spacious, about 400 square meters. There are four cypress trees, green and verdant. There is still a golden osmanthus tree. Around the Mid Autumn Festival, the fragrance of flowers is flowing and refreshing.

The unique architecture of Tuogu mosque is second to none among more than 100 mosques in Zhaotong area. It has a long history and is known as "Zusi" in Yunnan Province. The construction technology is superb, no nails, no wedges, no buttons, scientific and reasonable structure, after many vicissitudes, several earthquakes, no tilt collapse, it is amazing.
