Qingtongxia Grand Canyon is formed by the remaining veins of Helan Mountain and Niushou mountain. It is 8.6 kilometers long, 800-600 meters wide, 200 meters deep and 90 meters narrowest. It is known as "the Three Gorges on the Yellow River" and "the small Three Gorges on the Yellow River". There are ancient and modern hydraulic works, bird island and Guanyin sitting in peace, heavenly books hanging on the wall, sounding the alarm, the sound of the first bell of the ox, and the "paradise" beside the river and mountain. Guanyintai, Xanadu, Sandaogou, shuifoshan and Qingtongxia are stone carvings. The rocks on both sides are "earth like gold". The canyons are set off against each other in blue sky and clear water, showing the color of bronze, so they are named.

Qingtongxia Hydropower Station, known as the "pearl on the wall", is located at the exit of the Yellow River Grand Canyon in Qingtongxia, Ningxia. The dam is 687.3 meters high and 46.7 meters wide. It was built in 1958 with an average annual power generation of 1.35 billion kwh. Qingtongxia water control project is the earliest pier type hydropower station built in the upper reaches of the Yellow River in China. It is a comprehensive water control project which mainly focuses on irrigation and power generation, and takes into account flood control, ice control and other benefits. There are six river bed pier hydropower stations and two canal head hydropower stations in the dam. Qingtongxia water control project is the first water conservancy project built in western minority areas at the beginning of the founding of the people's Republic of China. It is one of the main hydropower bases in Northwest China, a symbol of national self-esteem and self-improvement, and also one of the bases of patriotism education. Its completion has ended the history of no dam water diversion in Ningxia for more than 2000 years Therefore, it also has the reputation of "the Yellow River in the world enriches Ningxia, and the Pearl Qingtongxia is blocked".
