Datong Drum Tower was built in Ming Dynasty. It should be matched with the bell tower to tell the time. During the reign of emperor Shunzhi, Emperor Qianlong and Emperor Xianfeng of the Qing Dynasty, they were all repaired. According to the records of Datong county annals, there are many pavilions in Datong in the Ming Dynasty, including Taiping tower in Heyang street in the East, bell tower in Qingyuan street in the west, Kuixing tower in Wuding street in the north and Drum Tower in Yongtai street in the south. So far, only the drum tower has survived. The drum tower is nearly square in plane, with three rooms in width and depth, about 20 meters in height, 18 meters in length from east to west, and 14 meters in width from north to south. The bottom layer is built with four corners of bluestone, with a cross through the door. Above is a brick and wood structure pavilion with three floors, each with a cornice. Under the cornice is a Dougong, and the top layer is a cross hill. Each floor is surrounded by doors, corridors and bars. There was a big drum on the top floor, which was used to tell the time at night.
