Shangqing Temple

Shangqing temple is a place name in Yuzhong District of Chongqing. It is close to Niujiaotuo. It is one of the main transportation hubs in the urban area of Chongqing. It is also the most concentrated place of Chongqing government organs. Chongqing Municipal People's government and the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee are located here. Nearby are the Chongqing People's hall, the Three Gorges Museum, and other scenic spots: No. 50 Zengjiayan, Guiyuan and people's Square.

Shangqing Temple

As early as before Jiajing of Ming Dynasty, there were many fields, tombs and hills near Shangqing temple. It was not until the reign of Jiajing (1522-1566) that a squire in this area built a Sanqing temple, covering an area of more than 400 square feet, at the location of today's Tiantan new village and stomatological hospital.

Shangqing temple has magnificent architecture, including Sanqing hall, zushi hall, Yuhuang hall, Lingguan hall, Leizu hall, God of wealth hall, etc.

The origin of history

Shangqing temple, in a long period of time, the temple was full of incense, and many believers came to worship. Because it was located on the Jialing River, many businessmen began to sell lime, firewood, livestock and other living materials here. Gradually, it became a trading place and became more and more prosperous.

Later, "Sanqing Temple" was renamed "Shangqing Temple", and people began to use the title "Shangqing Temple" to address this area, so "Shangqing Temple" gradually became the general name of this area, and it is still used today. In 1924, Xiong Kewu, the governor of Sichuan Province, led his troops to withdraw from Sichuan, forming a situation of warlords' scuffle in Sichuan. In the same year, Liu Xiang of Sichuan army drove yuan Zuming of Guizhou army away and occupied Shangqing temple area. The next year, the troops led by Yuan Zuming came back and wanted to occupy the area again, so inevitably there was a large-scale conflict with Liu Xiangyi in this area. Most of the statues in Shangqing temple were destroyed in this scuffle. Since then, the once prosperous Shangqing Temple began its decline.

Architectural style

During the Anti Japanese War, the police station of the Kuomintang government renovated the temple for public use. Even after liberation, the post office used it as a second canteen. However, with the advent of the ten-year catastrophe, the nationwide movement of "down with ghosts and gods" began to demolish all ancient buildings, and the temple was doomed. Up to now, Shangqing temple has only a false name.
