Chenggu bell tower

The bell tower is located in the southeast of Chenggu County. It is an ancient and exquisite tower building. According to the annals of Chenggu County, the bell tower was built in the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, then burned and rebuilt in the Guangxu period. Before and after 1949, it had been repaired many times. The most recent one was restored and rebuilt in 2006.

Introduction to the bell tower

The clock tower is a four storey brick and wood structure, about 15 meters high, with three storey pavilions, three storey cornices, and four storey roof with full roof and eaves. The four corners of the eaves are high, like a goshawk trying to fly. The roof of the building is compact and shrinks, but it turns up six corners, which is particularly smart. The cornice is in a circular arc shape, extending outwards as far as possible, with flexible birds and animals sitting on its ridge, riveted and tenoned on its lower abdomen, densely covered with various patterns, and a wind chime hanging at the front end.

Clock tower structure

The bottom floor of the bell tower is a square platform with a side length of about 10 meters, and the hollow bottom is a common arch structure on all sides. The second, third and fourth floors are mainly of wood structure, with wooden columns as bones and wooden lattice windows as walls, creating square pavilions, whose area is reduced layer by layer upward. The pavilion is surrounded by a two foot wide walkway and a three foot high wooden fence. These wooden cornices, pillars, panes and fences are all painted crimson. If the whole clock tower is bathed in the soft glow of sunset in spring, the pure red and the indigo color of glazed tiles are shining, which is really beautiful; if there is a wisp of breeze coming, the wind chimes under the eaves will ring, which will make the scene intoxicating.

The four arches of the bell tower face the streets in four directions. To the south is the South Street. There is a corner 100 meters away, which is called Silang temple. Xiangxi street is also known as wuzumiao street. To the East, it enters dadongguan. To the north, it is called Laojie street.
