Zhang Zizhong Memorial

Located in the north of Longshan Road, Linqing City, Shandong Province, and on the East Bank of the Grand Canal, it is a provincial Memorial approved and announced by Shandong provincial government. In May 1940, general Zhang Zizhong was ordered to cross the Xianghe River to attack. At noon on the 16th, he turned to Yicheng Shili Changshan. His troops were killed and wounded. The enemy's bullets penetrated his chest again. Unfortunately, he died for his country. In 1982, the State Council recognized General Zhang Zizhong as a revolutionary martyr.

On the occasion of General Zhang's centenary birthday, Linqing Municipal People's government collected more than 100 pieces of ink treasures from political, cultural and military celebrities at home and abroad and engraved them in the forest of steles. On this basis, general Zhang's memorial hall was established. The memorial hall is divided into three parts. The first part is the preface hall. On the front of the memorial hall is a handwritten inscription by Comrade Mao Zedong: "be loyal to your country". The second part is the picture display of General Zhang's life story. The third part is the corridor of famous people's steles. The calligraphy works collected from the general's centenary birthday by Qingyuan Poetry Society of Linqing Dynasty are carved and inlaid on the corridor of steles. There are more than 50 pieces.

General profile

General Zhang Zizhong, with the name of Chen, is a native of Tangyuan village in Linqing, Shandong Province. After graduating from middle school, he went to Tianjin and Jinan law and politics schools successively. He joined the League because he was distressed by the weakness of the country, the invasion of foreign powers and the 1911 Revolution. He resolutely joined the army. He first joined the army in Che Zhen Department, and then transferred to general Feng Yuxiang. He was promoted from a trainee to a commander of platoon, company, battalion, regiment, brigade and division, and became a rising star in the northwest army. In 1933, during the Great Wall Anti Japanese War, general Zhang served as the commander-in-chief of the front line for 29 years and stopped the Japanese army in xifengkou. They sent out surprise troops to attack the aggressors with a big team, which was very powerful both at home and abroad. The general took up the posts of chairman of Chahar Province, mayor of Tianjin, and acting mayor of Beiping successively. In the difficult and complicated environment, he consolidated his army and practiced martial arts, endured humiliation and indignation, and fought with Japan to defend national interests. After the "July 7 Incident" broke out, the general ventured to leave Beiping in disguise and returned to the army. He served as the commander of the 59th army and fought in Shandong, Anhui, Henan and Hubei provinces, winning many major victories. The first battle in Feishui was a victory. He reinforced Linyi and defeated the Japanese Panyuan division. Then he turned to Taierzhuang and defeated the offensive of the two Japanese regiments. In the battle of Wuhan, the general led a lone army to stop the enemy in Huangchuan, which won time to defend Wuhan. Soon after, the general's headquarters were transferred to the Xianghe River Valley in Hubei Province for garrison, which repeatedly inflicted heavy losses on the enemy. In May 1940, the general was ordered to cross the Xianghe River to attack and annihilate tens of thousands of enemies along the way. On May 15, the general led two regiments and secret service battalion to stop the Japanese army. The Japanese army gathered more than ten thousand people to fight back from the north and the south. The general was besieged and had a bloody battle waiting for help all day. At noon on the 16th, the Japanese army moved to the ten mile Changshan mountain in Yicheng. In the afternoon, the Japanese army approached. The general had been injured several times, and he still raised his arms to encourage his subordinates to fight bravely. The troops were all dead and wounded, and the enemy's bullets penetrated his chest again. Unfortunately, he died a martyr's death. He was then commander-in-chief of the 33rd group army and commander-in-chief of the right wing corps of the fifth theater, aged 50. In May 1940, the Japanese army launched the SuiZao campaign and gathered heavy troops to march westward. General Zhang Zizhong left a suicide note and led his troops to intercept the enemy. He fought hard in blood, took several bullets in his body, and died ten li long mountain. Zhang Zizhong was the supreme General of the Allied forces who died in the Second World War. The Kuomintang and the Communist Party held a grand memorial service in Chongqing and Yan'an respectively.
