At the beginning of Chikan District's port opening, most of the villagers who moved here worshipped a traditional shrine, with different customs, such as king Kang, white horse, Narcissus, Mazu, etc., which were significantly different from mainstream Buddhism. By the early years of the Republic of China, Chikan had become a French colonial concession. With the increasing prosperity of port trade, Buddhism had become increasingly prosperous, and temples of various sizes had been built one after another.

Cultural heritage

Zhanjiang was formerly known as Guangzhou Bay. During the French colonial period, western culture was integrated into Zhanjiang, making it a city combining Chinese and Western culture, and also a place where religious culture accumulated. There are many religious temples and nunneries in Zhanjiang City, and most of them are concentrated in Chikan. An obvious feature of the monasteries in Chikan is that they are relatively dense. The Buddhist temples in other places are generally located in the secluded countryside. At the beginning of construction, the monasteries in Chikan were all around the edge of the old urban area. With the expansion of the city, the original site of the monasteries has become the central urban area, which is also a major feature of the monasteries in Chikan.
