In 1866, an Italian missionary, bishop Benedict, purchased 6044 square meters of land from the British concession Ministry of industry and commissioned another Italian priest, Yu Zuobin, to build the church in the basilica style of Rome. The plane layout of the church is Latin cross shaped, with two-story brick and wood structure. The overall length is 40 meters and the width is 26 meters. The middle main hall of the three arcades in the church is 14 meters wide. There is a round tower clock tower on the left and right sides of the back, and the cross on the top of the hall is 22 meters high. With a construction area of 1024 square meters and 5 sacrificial platforms, it can accommodate more than 1000 people to do mass at the same time. The church is called St. Joseph's Church in the church because it worships Joseph, the adoptive father of Jesus. The front yard of the parish is the church and the Bishop's office, and the back yard is the Wuhan nunnery.

Historical evolution

In the early 20th century, the activity center of Eastern Hubei Catholic Diocese moved from Wuchang to Hankou. When the diocese was divided in 1923, it became the Bishop's Cathedral of Hankou. On December 10, 1944, when the US army bombed Wuhan, the church and the Bishop's mansion were partially destroyed and restored in 1948. It was repaired again in 1956. The hall was closed during the cultural revolution. It reopened in April 1980. At present, it is the educational administration activity center of Wuhan Catholic Church. There are 1 bishop, 2 priests, 2 nuns and more than 600 believers in the church. On weekdays, mass is held in the morning. More than 100 members of the church participated. On Sundays, there are 4 mass stations in the morning and evening, and more than 2000 people enter the hall during major festivals.
