Duxiufeng is a poem written by Yuan Mei in Qing Dynasty. The first six sentences of the poem describe the isolated state of Duxiu Peak, which is plain. Notes on words and sentences

(1) Duxiu Peak: it is located in the center of Guilin. It is isolated on the flat ground and has no other peak, so it is named.

(2) Context: in the old days, Canyu (Mr. Feng Shui) took the mountain as the dragon and the undulating mountain as the dragon vein.

(3) Nandou: the name of stars, in Nantian.

(4) Injury: obstruction.

Vernacular translation

I couldn't find the origin at all. I saw a peak suddenly appear, towering into the clouds, straight into the south star. Guilin's mountains and waters are extremely unique, and Duxiu Peak is second to none. Hundreds of steps up to the peak, a panoramic view of the city, but see the mist filled, rippling blue waves. Green mountains can still stand like strings. What's the sadness of being isolated and helpless!

Appreciative Remarks

Duxiufeng was written by Yuan Mei when he revisited Guilin in his later years. Although there are few selected comments and appreciation, it is almost forgotten, but close reading of it, we can still clearly feel the aesthetic pursuit of "Xingling" theory.

The title is "Duxiu Peak", but the poet doesn't give a general plain explanation. Instead, he uses the abrupt brushwork of "there is no origin, and suddenly a peak is inserted into the South Dou" and exaggerates the language. The word "insert" vividly describes the poet's sharp and unique aesthetic feeling when he meets Duxiu Peak by chance, showing the dynamic beauty of Duxiu Peak, and also vividly highlights the extraordinary momentum of Duxiu Peak crossing and soaring into the sky. At the same time, from the isolated mountain to the isolated life, he expressed a kind of positive, optimistic and upward feelings.

This poem tells us that Duxiu Peak is isolated and towering, and embodies the noble pursuit of self-defense. The author first wrote that looking at Duxiu Peak from a distance, it is like a sharp sword inserted into the sky. It is high and straight. Guilin has many wonderful landscapes, but it is far less majestic and strange than this peak. The city is vast and broad-minded. About the author

Yuan Mei (1716-1797) was a poet and essayist in Qing Dynasty. In his later years, he was a native of Qiantang (today's Hangzhou, Zhejiang). In the fourth year of Qianlong's reign, he was a Jinshi and elected a good scholar. He was released to the south of the Yangtze River as a county magistrate. He successively served as a county magistrate in Lishui, Jiangning, Jiangpu and Shuyang of Jiangsu Province for seven years. He had a reputation for being an official and hard-working in politics. He had no intention of becoming an official in his official career. In the fourteenth year of Qianlong's reign (1749), he resigned and lived in seclusion in Suiyuan of xiaocangshan in Nanjing. He returned at the age of 40. At the foot of xiaocang mountain in Jiangning, we built a garden to sing about it. There are many disciples of poetry, especially female ones. Yuan Mei was one of the representative poets in the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods. Together with Zhao Yi and Jiang Shiquan, Yuan Mei was called the "three masters of Qianlong school"; together with Zhao Yi and Zhang Wentao, Yuan Mei was called the "three masters of Xingling school". His representative works include xiaocangshanfang poetry anthology, Suiyuan poetry, Suiyuan essays, etc.
