Wangxia Fort

Wangxiashan Fort (or wangxiashan fort, lianfengshan Fort) is an ancient fort located in Macao wangxiashan municipal park. Wangxia fort is located in Wangxia mountain. You can reach it straight up the ramp of Wangxia fort on the US Deputy General road. The construction of Wangxia Fort started from the 18th Wangxia fort, which is located in the beautiful Wangxia mountain. It can be reached from the ramp of Wangxia fort on the road of American deputy general.

Located on Wangxia mountain, which is 60 meters above sea level, it used to be one of the military defense strongholds in Portuguese colonial period.

Historical evolution

In 1849 (the 29th year of Daoguang in Qing Dynasty), Wangxia fort was built at the beginning.

It was rebuilt and completed in 1864-1866 (the third year of Tongzhi reign of Qing Dynasty). The Wangxia fort was built under the supervision of Macao governor amariu. It was the first fort built by Portugal after the implementation of colonialism in Macao. In the past, it was one of the important military defense strongholds in Macao. It can install 10 cannons, and its position can overlook the activities in the area around the gate of Macao.

Completed in 1866, it covers an area of 6300 square feet.

After the fort, it was changed into a camp for non Portuguese soldiers stationed in Macao, so this mountain is commonly known as "nigger mountain".

In 1960, Wangxia fort was out of use. There used to be soldiers from Portuguese Africa, so it is also called nigger mountain.

After Macao took out the garrison, the barracks were deserted and vacant. In the 1980s, it was transformed into a Tourism Institute under the jurisdiction of the Tourism Department of the Macao government.

There is a barracks on the east side of Wangxia mountain, east of balira street and opposite to aoguangshi, but it was still demolished in 2008 in the face of the call for reservation.

At that time, the government claimed that it was for the construction of social housing, but until 2009, the land was used as a parking lot.

Construction scale

Wangxia Fort covers an area of about 700 square meters and is rectangular in shape, while the powder magazine beside the gate is round. The fort wall is granite, about 6 meters high. The entrance of the fort is 2.5 meters wide and 3 meters high. The door is a thick wooden door, and the roof of the entrance is paved with gneiss. There are 11 gun holes on the wall of its entrance, and a concrete observation platform 4 meters above the platform is set on the fort. In the battery, there is a passage leading to the nearby powder magazine and observation platform. Different from other fort in Macao, the muzzle of this fort is facing China and directly pointing to the direction of closing the gate.

Now it has been transformed into wangxiashan municipal park. The surrounding environment is very beautiful. The mountain road is full of trees and flowers. The Romanesque square, fountain, artificial lake, waterfall, promenade and the ancient fort set off each other, which is a good place for tourism.
