Shang Xianfang

Shangxianfang is located in lane 358, middle Huaihai Road (formerly Xiafei Road), a residential building in Lane Lane of Shikumen, which was built in 1924.

General situation

The name of shangxianfang is related to shangxiantang.

Shangxiantang was founded by American Christian missionary Li Jiabai in Beijing in 1897 to spread Christian culture and ideas. It was translated as "China International Society" in English and burned by the boxers in 1900. In 1903, Li Jiabai came to Shanghai to rebuild Shangxian hall, which was located on the north side of Xiafei road. After collecting money, he built a lecture hall and a building for foreign language, politics and history learning. After Li Jiabai died in 1927, Shangxian hall was dissolved. In 1921, real estate developers used the fame of shangxiantang to build Lilong house.

Shangxianfang covers an area of 6120 square meters, with a total construction area of 10180 square meters. There are three rows of single bay and Double Bay row houses in the lane. The main lane and the Branch Lane are in the shape of "Feng". The main lane has a cross street building along the street, the eaves of the lane are covered with cement, the facade is decorated with Baroque lines and flowers, and the Branch Lane has a coupon and brick concrete structure. Along the street, there are shops on the ground floor and residential buildings on the second and third floors. Each house in the lane has two floors, with machine red brick fair faced wall. The wall base has a 1 meter high cement wall. There is a patio in the dark gate. Through the floor long wooden window is the guest hall, the kitchen is behind, and the front guest hall is upstairs. If it is the end unit, there are front and rear wing rooms on the side. Above the shack is the pavilion, and above it is the sun terrace.

Most of the residents are small businessmen, teachers and writers. A friend of Yu Dafu, a famous writer, once lived in shangxianfang. He often visited his friends and met with other intellectuals who lived in the same Shikumen house. In January 1927, Yu Dafu went to shangxianfang to visit his friend sun Baigang. Sun lives here, and people of culture often go to his house to get together, such as writers Zhang Kebiao and Fang Guangtao. However, after this visit, Yu Dafu would come to the sun family every few days. Instead of chatting with friends, he came to find a 20-year-old lady from Hangzhou, Wang Yingxia. At that time, Wang Yingxia lived in the pavilion of the sun family. Yu Dafu fell in love with her at first sight, which broke out a vigorous, life and death love.

Since the 21st century, high-rise buildings have sprung up in Shanghai, and most of the Shikumen houses have been demolished. Shangxianfang, as a representative Shikumen building in Linong, is listed as a municipal cultural relic protection unit. Although it is located in the bustling Huaihai Road, it can still be protected between the subway and the North-South elevated road, which is not easy.

Shangxianfang itself is the property of the French Catholic Church. Shangxianfang was also named after the academic group shangxiantang. It was founded in Beijing by American social activist Li Jiabai because it not only believed in Jesus, but also respected Confucius. Due to the destruction of shangxiantang in Beijing during the Boxer Movement, Li Jiabai bought 14 mu of land for reconstruction in Shanghai Xiafei road in 1903. In 1917, because of his strong opposition to China's participation in the war, Li Jiabai was deported by the Chinese authorities at the request of the US minister to China, and Shang Xiantang was closed. In 1921, the real estate developers built a stone gate lane house on the original site, and named it shangxiantang. Another saying is that shangxianfang was built in 1924.

Yu Dafu and his wife

Since the end of 1926, Wang Yingxia has lived with sun Baigang and his wife at 40 shangxianfang. On a Friday in January 1927, Yu Dafu went to shangxianfang to visit his classmate sun Baigang and met Wang Yingxia. After that, he took advantage of the opportunity of visiting sun's house to meet Wang Yingxia. Yu Dafu's repeated visits also became a love story in the Chinese literary world at that time. Although Yu Dafu was married at that time, he still fell in love with Wang and finally got married in Shanghai.

Shangxianfang lane has 57 two-story buildings, a total of 71, with a construction area of 9720 square meters, covering an area of 6100 square meters. The main lane faces Huaihai Middle Road, and there are three branches in the shape of "Feng". There is always a arcade, commonly known as a cross street building, which is wider than a branch building. The house has three storeys along the street and shops on the ground floor. The facade of the buildings along the street has Spanish Baroque style, such as the curved gable and balcony on the third floor. The houses in the lane are two-story, with a total of 4 groups of row houses. Each building at both ends of each row has 2 bays, and the middle is a single bay.

Characteristics of Shikumen

Although shangxianfang is a typical Shikumen Lane Residence, it has been controversial whether it is a new style or an old style Shikumen. In fact, shangxianfang has some Western elements in materials and escalators, such as thread base and pattern. Its own form is not much different from that of the old Shikumen. Shangxianfang also adopts brick and wood structure. The exterior wall is paved with fair faced red brick, and the wall base has about 1 meter high cement wall. In the layout of the house, the patio is behind the black painted gate, the long partition fan commonly known as the floor long window is also used in the guest hall, and there are six white painted screen doors behind the guest hall. Behind the lobby are the kitchen and the back door. On the second floor, there is a guest hall, a pavilion on the kitchen, and a sun terrace on top.
