Beijing West Road

Located in Gulou District of Nanjing, Beijing West Road is an east-west trunk road. It starts from shitoucheng road in Caochangmen in the West and ends at Gulou square in the East. It is 3412 meters long and 27-49 meters wide. Ginkgo and Wutong are the main street trees in Beijing West Road. It is one of the most beautiful boulevards in Nanjing. Along the line, there are Jiangsu provincial Party committee, provincial government and various provincial authorities. The west section is mainly characterized by the new residential area in the capital during the period of the Republic of China, while the east section is mainly characterized by modern buildings, which are all kinds of government office buildings and campus buildings of Gulou campus of Nanjing University.

Historical evolution

Before the Republic of China, Beijing West Road was a deserted gully, farmland or pond. In the early years of the Republic of China, Jinling University was built in the southwest of the drum tower.

Since 1933, the road sections have been formed one after another.

The first section of Beijing West Road was a 540 meter long section from Ninghai Road to Xikang Road, with a width of 28 meters. It was built in 1933-1934 in conjunction with the new residential area. At that time, it was called Beiping Road, with western style garden houses on both sides.

After the end of the Anti Japanese War, from 1946 to 1947, Beiping road was extended 590 meters to the west, and an apartment building (now East China Hotel) of the American Advisory Group was built on the south side.

In 1954, it continued to extend westward to shitoucheng Road, with a width of 10 meters. At that time, a number of buildings with large roofs were built near the gate of Caochangmen, including No. 72, No. 74 and No. 77 (now Jiangsu Second Normal University).

From 1958 to 1959, the section from Gulou square to Ninghai in the east section of the road was built. The whole road was named Beijing West Road, forming a trunk road across the city center with Beijing East Road, and paving asphalt pavement at the same time.

In 1989, the Caochangmen bridge was built on the waiqinhuai river at the west end of Beijing West Road. The section from Caochangmen to the bridge was expanded into a three block slab road with a width of 40 meters.

Road specifications

Most sections of Beijing West Road (from Gulou park to Caochangmen square, 2491 meters long) are 27-28 meters in width, which is a slab road. The length from Caochangmen square to Caochangmen bridge at the west end is 471 meters. It is a three slab road with a width of 40 meters. The road from Gulou square to Gulou park is 70 meters long and 49 meters wide; the circular road of Gulou park is 380 meters long and 15-16 meters wide.
