Cliff statues in Shifo Village

Shifo village cliff statue group in Yongding town is the only large-scale cliff statue group in Beijing. There are 18 niches carved on the cliff in the north of Shifo village, which was listed as a district level cultural relics protection unit in 1981.

brief introduction

The newly discovered cliff statue is located in the south of Shifo village, about 200 meters away from the statue group. The cave is 2 meters wide, 1.6 meters high and 3 meters deep. The stone on the left side of the cave is engraved with the word "immortal cave", and the giant stone on the right side is carved with a cliff tablet. The stele is about 1 meter high, with the inscription "the throne of Jingquan Dragon King Tonghai" in its heart and some names on both sides. Due to years of wind erosion, the handwriting is not clear, from the signature can be discerned vaguely "twelve years of Jiajing of Ming Dynasty" and other words. A diamond shaped stone next to the monument is engraved with the word "Buddha" one meter square.

The site is located at the foot of Jietai Temple, a famous temple in the west of Beijing. It has a history of more than 460 years. Its discovery further clarifies the carving age of the cliff statues in Shifo village, which is of great significance to the study of the development of Buddhism in the Ming Dynasty in this area.
