Guanhai Garden

Located in the southeast of Gulangyu Island, Guanhai garden was built in the 19th century, covering an area of more than 100 mu, which is 25% of Gulangyu Island. It has 20 national and municipal key protected cultural relics and other historical buildings, including 6 kulangyu world cultural heritage buildings.

Development history

At first, Guanhai garden was farmland and green space. Since the middle of the 19th century, Westerners began to enter. At first, British diplomats built the British Consulate at No. 6 Tianwei road. Later, the United States Reformed Church moved Yude girls' school to the east of Tianwei Road, where Xiamen Customs built a residential area. With the completion of residences, schools, single family villas, clubs and other buildings, Guanhai garden has become a multi-national area inhabited by Western missionaries, customs officials, diplomats and foreign businessmen.

There are 20 historic buildings in Guanhai Park, of which 4 are national protected historic buildings, 1 is key protected building, 6 are general protected historic buildings, and others are general buildings.

Yude girls' school

Yude girls' school is a large-scale public building in the early days of Gulangyu Island. It is a typical colonial veranda building. The building is two stories high, with a "one" shape on the plane and a building area of 570 square meters. Gulangyu is a world cultural heritage site and a national key protected cultural relic.

In 1870, the American reformed church opened its first primary school in Liaozai, Xiamen, and later opened a "girls' school". In 1880, when the school caught fire, the women's school moved to Tianwei on Gulangyu Island, known as "Tianwei women's school" or "Citigroup women's school". At first, it was just a two-level girls' school similar to a primary school. The school mainly recruited rural girls from Zhangzhou and Quanzhou. In 1910, the school was officially renamed "Yude girls' school".

After the founding of the people's Republic of China, "Yude women's middle school" and "Huairen women's middle school" were merged and changed into Gulangyu women's middle school and Xiamen women's middle school successively. Later, they were merged into Xiamen No.2 Middle School in Fujian Province. The school site is still on Gulangyu Island.

Deputy Commissioner of Customs residence

The residence of the Deputy tax department of the customs is the residence of the senior staff of Xiamen Customs. It is composed of two buildings. It is the world cultural heritage of Gulangyu and a national key protected cultural relic. From 1865 to 1870, Xiamen Customs purchased a villa from Yingshang Deji, which was destroyed by a strong typhoon in September 1917. From 1923 to 1924, two new buildings were built in the original site. Among them, No. 9 Zhangzhou road was called "hill crest", covering an area of about 650 square meters; No. 11 Zhangzhou road was called "hill view", covering more than 820 square meters.

Club of Nations

With a construction area of more than 1500 square meters, Wanguo club is the world cultural heritage of Gulangyu and a national key protected cultural relic.

In the early 1920s, the club moved from the original site of luer reef to the hillside near the seashore of Tianwei East Road. Wanguo club was a place for entertainment and communication of foreigners, Chinese dignitaries and senior Chinese employees of foreign companies in Gulangyu at that time. It was also known as Qunlou at that time, with dance hall, bar, billiards room, bowling, foreign language book reading room and communication hall.

Sanluo girl building

Sanluo girl's building is a combination of Chinese and Western architecture. The brick work is fine, the shape is beautiful, and the proportion is beautiful. The roof has the characteristics of traditional southern Fujian, while the wall and window adopt the Western modeling, especially the cloister. At that time, there were three American female teachers in this building. They devoted their youth and talent, never married, and were deeply loved by the local people. Therefore, this building is called the girls' building.

Lianer Hall

Lianertang is a European style building. Corridor type structure, arch, underground moisture-proof layer, small and exquisite shape. The kindergartens of Yude women's school in the same period were run by the Orthodox Church in the United States to promote the "Gospel".

Senior staff dormitory of Asiatic fire oil company

The building is connected with the building by the elevated concrete slab beam railings corridor. The modeling and facade design are simple and generous, which is very different from the general European style buildings in Gulangyu.

French Consulate

The French Consulate is built in the style of European style. The white building exterior wall, arched cloister, roof with tile and balcony, etc. are simple and generous.

Dutch residence

The Dutch residence has the biggest characteristics of European architecture. The cloister, carving and yellow border make the building look more elegant.

Hong Tianen house

Built at the beginning of the 20th century, Hong Tianen villa is the best villa in the sea view garden. It has the remarkable characteristics of European architecture, with corridors and carvings. It has an extremely broad vision and faces the sea. It is exquisite and unique in appearance.
