Hanlin workshop

Built in the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, the archway stands across the road, with three rooms, three floors and four pillars. The whole body is made of tea garden stone, carved with birds, animals and various patterns. There are four stone lions on the base. This workshop was established in honor of the brothers of Xu Chengxuan and Xu Chengjia in Tang Mo Village. During the Kangxi Dynasty, both of them were Jinshi. They were both granted editing and good fortune. They belonged to the Imperial Academy, so they were called "fellow scholars".

Known as one of the "three wonders of ancient architecture", it, like Huizhou's ancient dwellings and ancestral halls, has written a magnificent and colorful movement of Huacai music for Huizhou's history and culture.

History and Humanities

"The number of archways in the world is Huizhou, and Huizhou archway is one and a half." one refers to the octagonal archway of Xu state in Shexian County, with the highest specification. Half refers to the "fellow Hanlin archway" of Tang model. It was built during the reign of Emperor Kangxi in Qing Dynasty. It was approved by Emperor Kangxi to commend the two brothers of Tang model. The two brothers were Xu Chengxuan and Xu Chengjia of the Tang model Xu family. They were selected as Jinshi in the 15th and 24th years of Kangxi respectively, and were appointed as Hanlin by Emperor Kangxi. It was very rare that the two brothers were selected as Jinshi at the same time.

Construction features

The archway is of three rooms, three floors and four columns, with relatively high specifications. It is 16 meters high and 9.6 meters wide. The word "Enrong" on the top is the emperor's gift of glory, which is different from the word "imperial edict" on some archways. Imperial edict means that the emperor not only gives the power to build the archway, but also gives money; and Enrong means that the emperor allows the construction of a certain scale archway, but has to pay his own money. It can be seen that the archway was built by Xu brothers themselves. There are four words "Sheng Chao Du Chen" below. Sheng refers to the emperor, Emperor Kangxi; they are all officials, and the Imperial Academy is equivalent to the academicians of the Academy of Sciences, and they are officials at the capital level; Chen (read Dong Yin) means remonstrance, but it is used to remonstrate the lower level to the higher level, officials to the emperor, and Chen is used to remonstrate the emperor to the officials. Now let's take a look at its carving. The whole archway is almost full of exquisite stone carvings. The stone pillars are engraved with plum blossoms, which means "the fragrance of plum blossoms comes from the bitter cold", indicating the hardship of the two compatriots in their ten-year hard study. The four stone pillars are engraved with crane auspicious clouds, which means crane roaring nine days and flying cloud ambition. The lower beams are respectively engraved with the patterns of Unicorn sending children, carp jumping on the dragon's gate and magpie reporting good news. There are two lions, among which the male master plays with the Pearl, and the female lion plays with the lion, which is very vivid and vivid.
