Since its completion in 1904, Xuanhua Catholic Church was overhauled in 1935. After the return of the Catholic Church in 1980, the roof of the church leaked heavily, the surface of some stone pillars was damaged, and the altar disappeared. In 1986, Xuanhua district government allocated 80000 yuan and the church raised 160000 yuan to carry out the comprehensive rehabilitation project. At that time, under the leadership of the late father Chen Huayu and father Zhang Dezheng, engineers Zhao Hui, Li Wu and others carefully designed the restoration project, and the majority of Catholics worked voluntarily. This restoration project restored three sacrificial platforms. Statues were replaced by portraits at the altar of the virgin and Joseph, and two bishops' tombstones were restored and re erected. The music building uses I-shaped steel frame instead of wooden frame. The biggest project is the restoration of two bell towers and gables. The hall is painted again and equipped with all kneeling benches in the hall. It was reopened in October 1986.

Development history

In the summer of 1944, Japan forcibly occupied the overhaul Institute as the seat of Xuanhua provincial office, and the overhaul Institute moved to the east courtyard of bishop's mansion, named "Shengjia overhaul Institute". In 1954, it was completely broken up.

Xuanhua was liberated for the first time in 1945. In November of the same year, the former "Chahar democratic government" was set up in the Da Da Yuan and Bishop's office.

3. Restoration, reopening and overhaul of the return Hall: (1976-2003)

After the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China was successfully held, the country began to implement the religious policy in 1979. In December 1980, Xuanhua returned the hall to the church, part of the teaching property was implemented, the rent was paid on schedule, and part of the compensation was given.

In order to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Xuanhua Catholic Church's "Glorious Cross hall" and welcome the presence of all walks of life and brothers and sisters at home and abroad, Wang Zhihai's father raised money from various sources and took everyone's opinions into consideration. From March to July 2003, the hall was overhauled again. After two renovations, Xuanhua Catholic Church has maintained its original appearance.

Evaluation of Xuanhua Hall

1. The architectural style of Xuanhua Catholic Church is a standard Gothic building. The Twin Bell spire tower is majestic. The interior is made of large stone columns and flying buttresses, truss, wood and stone. The decoration is simple and bright, rich in religious color, solemn and gorgeous, rough and thick.

2. At that time, the scale of Xuanhua Catholic Church was comparable to that of Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and other big cities, which had a great influence at home and abroad.

3. Xuanhua hall is made of local green stone. It is carved with rough knife technique. The lines are bright, changeable, smooth and lively. At home and abroad, such scale and style of architecture are rare. According to authoritative priests, all foreign priests or visitors who come to our church give high evaluation to the architectural style of the church, which is of great cultural value.

4. Xuanhua hall is of great cultural research value in terms of its religious connotation, architecture, aesthetics and acoustics.
