Suzhou City Wall Museum is located in the hollow part of the southern part of the xiangmen section of Suzhou city wall.

Suzhou ancient city wall Museum has two floors, covering an area of more than 900 square meters. It is implemented by Suzhou culture and tourism group. It is mainly aimed at building the spiritual home of Suzhou people and pursuing the integration of the cultural belonging of old Suzhou and the cultural identity of new Suzhou.

Development history

Suzhou Municipal Bureau of cultural relics, Suzhou Museum and Suzhou Institute of archaeology have provided a number of representative exhibits of Suzhou city wall, especially the excavated rammed earth wall specimens stacked on the ash pits during the Warring States period, and the Han Dynasty wall discovered when the xiangmen Shuicheng gate was excavated in 1980

Watergate mortar is a rare collection. In addition, 19 maps of the ancient city of Suzhou in different historical periods are displayed in the preface hall. The city walls of Suzhou have been destroyed several times, and the perimeter has changed many times. From the Eastern Han Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty, it has been maintained at about 24 km, reduced to 19 km in the Ming Dynasty, and expanded to 25.9 km in the Qing Dynasty.

The exhibition area of Suzhou City Wall Museum consists of two floors, covering an area of nearly 1400 square meters. It is divided into six exhibition halls: "preface hall", "Millennium of the city", "story of the city gate", "outside the city", "memory of the city head" and "reappearance of the city wall". It shows the historical changes and archaeological achievements of Suzhou city wall.

Suzhou has a history of more than 2500 years. The 15 kilometer long ancient city wall is a witness of Suzhou's historical civilization. It is not only magnificent, but also creates a "sub" shaped plane layout and a unique structure of two gates, each of which has become a unique landscape line with high cultural and academic value.

Influenced by various factors, except Panmen, xumen, Jinmen and part of the city wall, the rest of Suzhou were gradually demolished, and relatively complete bricks and stones were preserved

The ancient city wall is only 1249.98 meters, accounting for 8.22% of the total length; the scattered wall with brick and stone protection is only 618.19 meters, accounting for 4.07% of the total length. After the "Cultural Revolution", Suzhou began to protect and repair the ancient city wall. The protection and repair project of Suzhou ancient city wall has been completed, with a total length of more than 1400 meters. The ancient city wall of changmen North Wharf section, pingmen section and xiangmen section reappears the old simple and magnificent style.

Among them, pingmen section is an important node of the South Square of the railway station and the landscape protection belt around the ancient city. On the North-South central axis of the railway station, a imitated ancient city building is built on the other side of the ancient city river. The total height of the building is more than 20 meters, with one large gate hole, two small gates and three gates at the lower part, and two-story imitated ancient pavilions at the upper part. The existing 266 meter wall is reserved in the east of the tower, and a new 346 meter wall is built in the west, and a green landscape of nearly 20000 square meters is expanded around the tower;

The total length of the city wall protection and restoration of changmen North Wharf section is 465 meters, which is divided into two parts: new construction and restoration. The new construction is 109.52 meters, and the restoration is 355.48 meters. The restoration part protects and retains the original shape and structure of the city wall, and uses raw materials and technologies as far as possible. The whole wall is 12 meters wide at the bottom and about 9 meters wide at the top. Xiangmen section is located in the north of xiangmen bridge in the east of Pingjiang historical district. It starts from xiangmen bridge in the South and ends at Liangyuan section in the north, with a length of nearly 650 meters. The newly built wall is 370 meters, and the rest is the restored wall site. The wall is 12 meters wide at the bottom, 9 meters wide at the top and 8.45 meters high.
