Located on the most prosperous street of Jincheng Town, Jinmen County, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, Qiu Lianggong's mother's Day filial piety archway is the largest and best preserved archway in Taiwan. It is also the only first-class historic site in Jinmen, known as "the first archway in Taiwan and Fujian".

In 1812, the memorial archway was awarded by Emperor Renzong because of Qiu Lianggong's many miraculous achievements. In addition, he presented a gift to his mother Qiu Yipin and approved to build a Jiexiao archway. The purpose of building the memorial archway was to praise and spread the story of Xu's 28 years of faithful observance of the Festival by Qiu Lianggong, the Zhejiang navy commander in the Qing Dynasty. He raised his only son and became a pillar of the country.

Documentation

It is recorded in the county annals of Jinmen: "jiexiaofang: in the east gate of Houpu, during Jiaqing period, it was set up as a gift to governor Qiu Zhiren's wife Xu. It is now listed as a national first-class historic site. 」

According to the legend of the martyr, "the Xu family, Houpu Qiu Zhiren's wife, died at the age of 30. The orphan Lianggong was born at the age of 30. He was raised hard and kept the festival for more than 30 years. During the Jiaqing period, the Lianggong official, the governor of Zhejiang Province, invited him to pay homage, built a house, granted his wife Yipin, and offered sacrifices to his filial descendants. 」

The origin of history

Qiu Lianggong (born in Qianlong 34, 1769, died in Jiaqing 22, 1817, at the age of 49) died 35 days after his birth. His father died. He was raised by his mother, Xu, who was under 30 years old. When he grew up, he joined the army and served the country valiantly. He was promoted by Li Changgeng, the governor of Zhejiang Province, and was promoted to Jiaqing 10 Four years later, he was promoted to governor of Zhejiang Province. In the same year, he exterminated Cai Qian, a pirate, and put an end to the southeast pirate rebellion.

In 1812, Qiu Lianggong's mother Xu had been widowed for 28 years. The purpose of building the memorial archway was to praise and spread Qiu Lianggong's mother's filial piety spirit.

The shape of historic sites

The structural form of jiexiaofang is four columns, three rooms and three floors. It is carved with high-grade Quanzhou white granite and qingdou stone, with a height of more than 10 meters. Under the four pillars, there are four pairs of male and female stone lions as pillars. At the top of the archway, there are imperial edicts and stone lions. The dragon pillars, cloud patterns and other majestic and simple sculptures of the archway are decorated with a variety of decorations, including animals, plants, utensils, auspicious patterns, as well as the wonderful plot sculptures symbolizing Qiu Lianggong's return home after his success. They are all masterpieces of famous inland masters. There are four pairs of couplets on the front and back of the beams and columns of the memorial archway, which respectively record the deeds and virtues of praising Xu's filial piety. In terms of the form and decoration of Qiu Lianggong's mother's Day filial piety square, and the architectural technology in the early Qing Dynasty, it took considerable manpower and material resources to achieve.

Legend

It is said that when the chastity archway is erected, the imperial edict plate issued by the emperor will be hung at last, but it can not be hung at all. The officials felt strange and wondered if there was any secret? So I asked Qiu Lianggong's mother, Xu, to ask, "are there any omissions or omissions in your 30 years of observing the festival? After thinking about it for a long time, Xu realized that when he was young, there was a peddler Hawking at the door. At that time, he bought some needles and thread and gave him money. When the peddler changed money, he didn't put it on a plate, but gave it to Xu directly with his hand. When he received the money, the peddler's finger touched Xu's palm. Although it had been 20 or 30 years, the peddler was still alive. The official asked the peddler to come and ask him whether he had done it intentionally or unintentionally. The peddler's face turned red and he couldn't speak. Unexpectedly, he was killed by thunder on the spot. At the same time when the peddler died, the imperial edict board flew up on its own and hung above the memorial archway impartially, but slightly declined. The officials reported the official documents. Soon after the emperor's commendation came down, he sent the seven foot white silk to Xu's home. Xu hanged himself.
