Qiongzhou bridge is a national key project constructed by Hainan provincial Party committee and government using national debt. It is also one of the major measures taken by Hainan provincial Party committee and government to develop the economy of Northern Hainan. The total planned investment of the bridge is nearly 200 million yuan. The bridge is located between Qiongshan city and Haikou City (after the adjustment of Haikou and Qiongshan administrative divisions in 2002, it is now located in Meilan District of Haikou City), with a total length of 1396.98 meters. Qiongzhou bridge crosses the Nandu River. The main span of the bridge is a five hole concrete-filled steel tube arch structure with a width of 23 meters.

Qiongzhou bridge is constructed according to the standard of urban bridge, with two-way four lanes of 15m, non motorized lanes of 1.5m on both sides, sidewalks of 1m and green belts of 1m. Qiongzhou bridge is an important hub connecting the center of Haikou and the new urban area. It is a key project connecting Haikou to Wenchang Expressway (formerly qiongwen Expressway and Qiongshan Wenchang Expressway).

Qiongzhou bridge has a high technical content. A number of indicators are pioneered in China or the province. The steel pipe arch used in Qiongzhou bridge has the largest rise span ratio in China. Qiongzhou bridge is a five span through concrete-filled steel tubular arch with a main span of 108m and a rise span ratio of 1 ∶ 4.5. In addition, Qiongzhou bridge has made a technological breakthrough in the production of steel pipe arch, bending and butt joint. At the same time, as the tide of Nandu River is sea water, anti-corrosion and impermeable concrete suitable for marine environment is used for the piers.

In 2013, Qiongzhou bridge, which has been used for 10 years, ushered in the first large and medium-sized repair. The repair and reinforcement project of Qiongzhou bridge will start on May 8, 2013, with a construction period of 4 months.
