Houhe Tianmen Gorge
Tianmen gorge of Houhe River in Wufeng, Hubei Province is located on the magic 30 ° north latitude line in Southwest Hubei Province. It is located in Wufeng County, Yichang City, Hubei Province. It is 20 kilometers away from Wufeng County, with a total area of 103.40 square kilometers and an expansion area of 409 square kilometers. Tianmenxia of wufenghou river was established in March 1985 with the approval of the former Yichang district administrative office. It was upgraded to a provincial nature reserve in June 1988 with the approval of the provincial government. It was promoted to a National Nature Reserve in April 2000 with the approval of the State Council. Tianmenxia of wufenghou river is the second National Nature Reserve in Hubei Province after Shennongjia. It is the only National Nature Reserve of forest ecosystem type in Yichang City, and is the preferred area for the national project of releasing South China tiger. The main protected objects of Houhe Tianmen gorge are: forest ecosystem and its biodiversity in the middle subtropical zone; rare and endangered wildlife resources and their habitats, especially the rare and precious tree species community and the international critically endangered animals and habitats such as South China tiger, leopard and black muntjac; typical natural landscapes in different natural zones, etc. According to the classification principle of vegetation in China, there are 11 vegetation types, 45 formations and 49 clusters in Tianmen gorge of Houhe River, including temperate coniferous forest and warm coniferous forest. It has been found that there are 2292 species of vascular plants belonging to 852 genera of 233 families in Houhe Tianmen gorge, accounting for 73% of the total plants in Hubei Province and 33% of the total plants in China. There are 25 species of national key protected plants, including 7 species of Davidia involucrata, calyx sinensis, Ginkgo biloba, etc., which belong to the first level of national protection, and 18 species of yellow fir, water green tree, Liriodendron chinense, Toona sinensis, Zelkova, etc., which belong to the second level of national protection. There are 307 species of terrestrial wild vertebrates in Houhe Tianmen gorge, accounting for 47.2% of the total species in Hubei Province, including 57 species of national key protected wild animals, accounting for 45.5% of the total species in Hubei Province. There are 6 species of national grade I protected animals, such as leopard, clouded leopard, forest musk deer and golden eagle; 51 species of national grade II protected animals, such as macaque, black bear, gazelle and red bellied pheasant.
