Xinjiang is the first place where Catholicism was introduced into Shanxi Province. In the Ming Dynasty (1620), Italian priest Arius came here to preach and established the first Catholic Church in Shanxi Province. In 1935, the Vatican announced the establishment of the Diocese of Xinjiang, which governs the Catholic churches in 22 nearby counties. Later, Dutch priest Kong Zhaoming raised money to build this Gothic architectural style large Catholic Church. Its magnificence and beauty make it known as the four largest Catholic churches in China together with the churches in Qingdao, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
